From our Italian Correspondent, Olivia, .. How to eat and drink like the Italians do... well at least this is what the Romans do!

Breakfast -

* Quick and on your feet.

* Italians do not drink cappuccino's after 11am - go for an espresso after lunch and dinner.

* Choose from: cappuccino chiaro, cappuccino senza schiuma, caffe latte, caffe macchiato, latte macchiato, caffe corretto...

Meaning: less coffee in the cappuccino, no froth, tall glass hot milk and coffee, espresso with dash of frothy milk, tall glass more milk than coffee, espresso with grappa... you can also choose caffe al vetro - which is an espresso served in a small glass and you can choose hot, warm and cold variations of most of the above! e..g. caffe macchiato caldo, caffe macchiato freddo or cappuccino tiepido! Got it? :-)

Lunch -

Usually a sandwich - tramezzino, or panino. On Sundays and at weddings this is big time feasting! Rules to remember, don't expect pasta to be served as a side dish, Primi - are risottos, pasta, soups etc. Secondi are meat and veg or fish. Veg can be ordered and eaten with bread, and you are allowed to do what is known as the scarpetta (the little shoe!) - which is to mop up any sauce you happen to have with your bread!

Tea? nope! Unless you are ill, when you might want to order a camomilla or a digestivo (kind of bicarbonate of soda!) in that case!

Dinner - Pizza, Pasta and all the rest. Golden Rules, pizza does not come with chicken, or pineapple, please! Best pizza is served in a wood burning oven, "cotto al forno a legna". It should not be soggy in the middle - my mother in law calls this sogginess "blebba" - which I think kind of sums it all up!

Finally "Buon appetito" - which by the way you are not supposed to say!
